Chapter 12

Shawn sat on the back of his pickup, one leg pulled up and his forearm resting on it, leaning against the side wall, his other leg dangling down.

He held his phone to his ear and waited for his dad to answer, looking up at the wide-open Iowa sky. Filled with stars, twinkling and beautiful.

The wind stirred the dry leaves of corn in the field beside him with a raspy sound, bringing the deep, fragrant smell of clean, resting earth to his nose. A good smell. Pure and right and familiar, even if he’d only smelled it in Arkansas before.

He’d stopped at a random deserted spot along the road about thirty minutes from Bridget’s farm, brown cornfields stretching on either side in the daylight, but now, in the dark and cold, they were just big, empty blobs of black.

There were no hotels in Prairie Rose, and the closest one was another ten minutes away.

But he hadn’t felt like going to the hotel just yet, wanting to be alone.

This seemed like as good a place as any.

“Shawn?” his dad answered.

“Hey, Dad.”

“You make it to Iowa okay?”

“I did. I met Bridget.”

“I see.” There was a pause. “What did you think of her?”

That seemed like an odd question for his dad. Shouldn’t he have been asking what he thought of the farm? Wasn’t that what he was supposed to be helping with? Interesting that his dad was asking about Bridget.

“I’m going to marry her tomorrow.”

That should answer his dad’s question.

He kinda figured his dad would be quiet for a while, so he didn’t look to see if he dropped the call when he met dead silence on the line. Instead, he leaned his head back up, picking out the Big Dipper and Orion’s belt.

He’d found the Little Dipper and was working on the North Star when his dad finally spoke.

“You know, Shawn, that of all your siblings, you’re the one that is the jokester. And I could see you thinking about why I might have sent you there, figuring it out, and messing with me about it. But I don’t think that’s the case.”

“It’s not. I didn’t figure things out until I was sitting here listening to the phone ring.”

“You don’t sound angry.”

“How could I be? My siblings are all happy. Deliriously happy in some instances, if not all. You and Mom knew exactly what they needed…who they needed. Even as I was figuring it out, I had to applaud you. I think you made a good choice in my instance as well.”

“But?” his dad said, as though hearing that word in his tone.

“I’m a little annoyed at myself for not figuring it out.”

His dad chuckled. Then he sobered. “How did you get her to agree so fast? Did you tell her that your parents were experts, and she should just trust them? Oh, wait, you couldn’t have since you just figured it out.”

“Did you know about the curse?”

His dad took a breath and then held it for a few seconds before saying, “Yeah.
